Hot lunch:

 

A hot lunch program is available for St. George School students by Food Service Professionals. Milk is also available. Menus are sent home for ordering on a monthly basis. Contact Laura Miller through the school office for more information.

POLICY ON NON-DISCRIMINATION

Saint George School respects the dignity of each student and will not bar admission to any child because of race, color, sex or national and ethnic origin. All can enjoy the rights, privileges, programs and activities that are available in our school. Saint George School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, or national and ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, loan programs, athletics, and other school administrative programs.

LEARNING DISABILITIES

St. George School does not have a specific curriculum designed for those students who are diagnosed as having a learning disability. Consideration for their attendance at St. George School will be determined by the principal.

AGE OF ADMISSION

A child entering Saint George School must abide by the requirements of the State of Illinois regarding the age of admission. Students are also required to present a birth certificate and baptismal certificate. At present this means a child entering kindergarten must have reached five (5) years before September 1st.

ORDER OF ADMISSION

Admission of students shall be in accordance with the following guidelines in order of priority as listed:

1. Students currently enrolled in St. George School.
2. Brothers and sisters of currently enrolled students.
3. Children of parishioners seeking enrollment for the first time.
4. Applicants whose residence is in the St. George community.
a. Catholic
b. non-Catholic
5. Transfer students from other Catholic schools.
a. From schools that are merging or consolidating.
b. From schools not offering full programs or from parishes with no schools.
6. Applicants whose residence is outside the St. George community if, and only where space is available, and as follows:
a. Catholic - with approval of Pastor and Principal in home parish.
b. Non-Catholic.

ADMISSION

At the time of registration parents must present the following papers: official birth certificate, baptismal certificate and current health and immunization records as proscribed under the Illinois State School Code. (Beginning July 1997, the Illinois Department of Public Health, Child Health Examination Code, will require all children enrolling in a child care facility or preschool program, the Kindergarten level and children entering fifth (5th) grade for the first time, to show evidence of three (3) doses of the Hepatitis B vaccine.)

ADMISSION OF TRANSFER STUDENTS: ALL STUDENTS ENTERING ST. GEORGE SCHOOL MUST BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH RULES.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE


The State of Illinois provides for compulsory attendance of all children between the ages of seven and sixteen years. The responsibility for compliance with the law belongs to the parents, but the school is obliged to keep accurate records of daily attendance. This record is kept on file.

SCHOOL YEAR AND SCHOOL DAY

The length of the school year and school day is determined by the State of Illinois and the Office of Catholic Education.

HEALTH RECORDS

A current dental and health record must be presented and placed on file for all students entering Kindergarten and 5th Grade. Also, evidence of a lead screening test must be part of the health examination. All transfer students must present a dental and a health record upon registering for school. NO STUDENT MAY BE ADMITTED TO A CLASSROOM UNTIL THE HEALTH AND DENTAL RECORDS ARE TURNED INTO THE OFFICE. Good menta
l, physical and emotional health are essential and necessary to facilitate the learning process.

MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH

Students with exceptional needs may be asked to have a psychologist, psychiatrist or certified counselor administer a psychological evaluation. Saint George will follow the recommendation of the psychologist or psychiatrist. Saint George is not equipped to deal with extreme or severe behavioral or emotional problems. Nor is it equipped to deal with students who have learning disorders.

St. George School is supported primarily by tuition and fees. Our School Board assists families through various fund raisers. St. George Parish also provides a subsidy to offset the cost of running St. George School.

Preschool


Statement of Purpose:


St. George School’s Early Childhood Program strives to provide a creative learning environment for the young child in a Catholic setting. Each child is nurtured and encouraged to develop the following qualities:
* positive self-image and acknowledgement of self-worth.
* basic social skills including sharing and cooperation.
* increased independence
* a trust in adults other than parents.
* being a part of a group and accept the need to share and cooperate.
* respect toward others and responsibility for his/her own actions.
* desire to learn.
* awareness that he/she is a child of God and is loved by the Creator.

GOALS:


Respect each child for the unique individual he/she is, recognizing his/her limitations and potentials.
Develop the whole child: spiritually, academically, physically, and socially.  Develop the child’s sense of prayer, increase his/her understanding of the world in light of Catholic teaching, and build a foundation for an adult faith.  Help each child develop his/her potential for good, and increase his/her awareness of self.

Religion
Religion Readiness is a vital part of a Catholic School early childhood program. Using concrete life experiences and bible stories a child learns the meaning of love and being loved in a family/school setting. The child begins to learn he/she is special, not only in his/her family, but in God’s family. The child is introduced to the goodness of God as shown in the gifts of creation and through His greatest gift, Jesus Christ. This is done in a secure and trusting setting.


Math Readiness
Counting, learning shapes, number recognition, and calendar activities provide math and thinking skills for the preschooler.

Reading Readiness
Reading skill development begins at birth and continues throughout a lifetime. These skills come from formal and informal activities within the family and in the school environment: field trips, show and tell, audio-visual materials, learning from left to right, top to bottom progression, eye-hand coordination, recalling story details, and happenings in a sequence. All aid the reading readiness process.

Developmental Free Play and Games
Both indoor and outdoor activities are outlets for joyous good times, exercise, practical learning and developing motor coordination, lessons of fair play, following directions, sharing, and good sportsmanship are learned. Play helps children to explore and examine the world and interact with peers. In this way, children learn proper social behavior.

Physical Education
Physical movement is an integral part of a young child’s growth. Children progress at their own developmental physical skills, enjoy large and small motor skills and physical fitness. They learn to identify and move parts of the body, along with good eating habits that encourage growth and strength, helping to develop a positive self-image.

Art
The child explores a variety of media of art expression that is developmentally appropriate.
Health and Safety
Concepts of health and safety are integrated into the program in a functional manner. The child learns about the body structure and functions, emotional health, cleanliness, and health habits. Children also acquire basic principles of safety in the classroom, on the playground, on the street, and in the home.
Rhythm and Music- Rhythmic activities, singing, and dance are experiences in which the preschool child responds creatively to music and song by listening, singing, creating body movements, and using rhythmic instruments.
