Saint George School
Saint George School is located in the far southwest
corner of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Currently we have an enrollment of
382 students with a faculty and staff of 24 part-time and full-time
teachers. We are part of Saint George Parish, which has over 4000
registered families. Our school opened its doors on September 7, 1949.
We have had a long and successful history of making Catholic education
available to hundreds of children from Saint George Parish and
surrounding parishes.
A group of parishioners were called to the rectory one afternoon in the
summer of 1948 by Father Lawrence Fitzpatrick. Father Fitzpatrick felt
there was a need for a parish school because of the growing number of
families moving into the area and the returning veterans, who were
starting families. But how could they do this with little or no funds?
With the blessings of the pastor and permission from authorities, the
parishioners took it upon themselves to tear down some depression-era
Civilian Conservation Corps buildings that had fallen into disrepair and
disuse. Saint George's first school was built from this and other
donated materials. In a few years, this first school building was
replaced by the first of three additions culminating with the addition
of the Parish Life Center which was completed in November of 1997.
The Mantellate Sisters
of Blue Island were invited to staff Saint George in those early days.
The doors opened to 52 students on September 7, 1949. The rest, as they
say, is history. Saint George School has served almost three generations
of children. Our graduates have entered all walks of business and
professional life. We are proud of all of them. But, we are even more
proud that these Saint George graduates have become adult members and
leaders in their parish communities. In addition, we want them to know
that we are continuing to build on and strengthen the traditions, which
these alums have forged.
